Abstract :
The Satra institution occupies an important place in the religious, social and cultural history of Assam. Emerging in the context of the Neo-Vaishnavite movement associated with Srimanta Sankaradeva and his successors, Satras gradually developed into centres of religious practice, cultural expression and community life. This article examines the historical development and socio-cultural significance of Khatara Satra in Darrang district of Assam, with particular attention to its contribution to the surrounding society. Khatara Satra is described as one of the significant Satras of Darrang and is traditionally associated with the period of the Koch King Naranarayan.
The study also discusses the association of Sri Govinda Atoi with the spread of Neo-Vaishnavism in the area. An important feature of Khatara Satra is its distinctive administrative structure, as the Satra is described as functioning without a Satradhikar and being managed by a governing body.
The study focuses particularly on the historical development of Khatara Satra, its festivals and traditions, especially the Pacati festival, and its contribution to the socio-economic and cultural life of the surrounding communities. The research employs historical and analytical methods and uses both primary and secondary sources. Information was also collected through field visits to Khatara Satra and interaction with Satra officials. The study suggests that Khatara Satra has extended its activities beyond religious functions and has participated in various forms of community-oriented cultural and developmental activities.
