Metal Ions - Nucleic Acid Interactions: Mechanism and Biological Significance

Abstract :
This review's primary objective is to acquaint nucleic acid experimenters with the physical principles underlying interactions between nucleic acids and ions. But further research is needed to completely understand the specifics of how RNA interacts with metal ions. The fact that ion interactions with nucleic acids cannot be simply switched between similarly charged ions is support. Given that different structures are solved under a wide range of ionic circumstances, it is important to carefully consider the physiological significance of RNA-ion interactions, which primarily involve K+ and Mg2+ cations. The analysis is made more challenging by the fact that the assignment is frequently imperfect and completed under unfavourable circumstances, which further restricts the generalization about the kinds of interactions these ions can have. What is known as an ion atmosphere is composed of ions that surround nucleic acids. The underlying behaviour of the ion atmosphere, however, is governed by physical principles that are different from the site binding principles with which biochemists are most familiar.
