Contributions of Professor Dr. Syed Rahmathullah to the Promotion of the Arabic Language and Islamic Studies

Abstract :

Professor Dr. Syed Rahmathullah was a distinguished scholar of the Arabic language and Islamic studies and one of the prominent academic personalities who contributed significantly to the development of Arabic education in India. Throughout his academic and professional career, he dedicated his efforts to teaching, research, academic supervision, translation, and the dissemination of Islamic knowledge. His scholarly activities played an important role in promoting Arabic language education and strengthening the study of Islamic sciences among students and researchers.
The present study examines the life, educational background, academic career, and scholarly contributions of Professor Dr. Syed Rahmathullah. It focuses particularly on his services at The New College, Chennai, his role in teaching and supervising students, his participation in academic activities, and his contributions through original writings and translations. The study also analyses selected publications, including Basic Arabic Grammar, the Diniyat series, his research on the literature of Dr. Taha Hussein, and his English translation of The Judgments of the Messenger of Allah (PBUH).
The study concludes that Professor Dr. Syed Rahmathullah made substantial contributions to the promotion of the Arabic language and Islamic studies through his long career as an educator, researcher, author, translator, and academic mentor. His scholarly legacy continues to inspire teachers, students, and researchers in the fields of Arabic language and Islamic studies.
