Effects of Yoga in Improving Attention Span and Concentration among Children with Intellectual Disability

Author : Parmod Sharma

Abstract :

Children with Intellectual Disability (ID) often experience difficulties in attention, concentration, memory, and adaptive functioning, which significantly affect their academic performance and daily living skills. Developing effective interventions to improve cognitive functioning is therefore an important concern in special education and rehabilitation of children with special needs. Yoga, an ancient mind-body practice, has emerged as a holistic intervention that combines physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), relaxation techniques, and meditation. Research suggests that yoga positively influences cognitive processes by reducing stress, improving self-regulation, enhancing neural functioning, and increasing attentional control. The present paper reviews the role of yoga in improving attention span and concentration among children with intellectual disability. Existing literature indicates that regular yoga practice contributes to improved focus, reduced hyperactivity, enhanced classroom participation, and better cognitive performance. Yoga provides a low-cost, non-pharmacological, and inclusive approach that can be effectively incorporated into special education programs. The paper highlights theoretical foundations, mechanisms of action, research evidence, and practical implications for educators, therapists, and parents. The findings suggest that yoga can serve as a valuable complementary intervention for enhancing attention and concentration among children with intellectual disability.
