The Therapeutic Impact of Panchakarma on Netra Roga: Insight through Ayurveda

Abstract :

Ayurveda is divided into eight specialities or branches namely Ashtanga of Ayurveda by Acharyas of Bruhatrayee. Acharya Sushruta is the first person who explained the ophthalmology and ENT & Dental Disorder in systematic manner in Uttartantra. Acharya Sushruta gives prime importance to eye. The Phrase "Swasthyasya Swasthya Rakshanam" represents maintaining the health of healthy person prevention of disease and Aaturasya vikara prashanam which means curing the disease of ailing person, Sansamanam (conservative), Samshodhana (Panchkarma) and the Shastra Chikitsa (surgical Procedure) are the essential treatment modalities follows to treat a disease. These are the basic treatment modalities explained in the classical texts of Ayurveda. Panchakarma is a branch of Ayurveda meant for the removal of vitiated Dosha, Mala or toxic part of body and balances Dosha Dushya through Vamana, Virechana, Basti, Nasya, Raktamokshana etc. Eyes are the seat of Alochaka Pitta, Tarpaka Kapha and all physiological Functions are maintained by Vyana Vayu. The vitation of this Doshas Causes Visual impairment many procedures and formulations have been described to cure the ophthalmic disorder. Acharyas have told that Panchakarma gives clarity and strength to sense organs and mind. In diseases like Abhishyanda, Adhimantha, Timira and Netra rogas most of Panchakarma therapies are indicated according to their severity of disease.
