Abstract :

Phytochemicals obtained from fruit crops significantly contribute towards the human health and plant defense mechanism. Conventional breeding strategies hardly contribute in enhancing their yield. Recent biotechnological strategies adopted for optimizing phytochemical yield in fruit crops include elicitation, in which biotic and abiotic agents are applied to trigger secondary metabolite production, and Metabolic engineering, which involves the alteration of premier genes and pathways to increase determined phytochemical production. These approaches, combined with advanced omics technologies and precision agriculture, providing promising directions to improve both the nutritional and commercial value of fruit crops. This review highlights the latest strategies adopted to enhance phytochemical yield in various fruit crops.
