Study to Assess the Knowledge Attitude and Practice of Cosmetic Use Leading to Adverse Effect on Skin among Adolescent Girls in Selected School of Jabalpur City

Abstract :

Cosmetics are products applied to the body for the purpose of beautifying, cleansing or improving appearance and enhancing attractive features. The estimated value of cosmetic industry today is around 20 billion dollar globally. As a consumer, we are constantly attracted in using beauty and personal care products. But these products, which are supposed to make us feel healthy and look beautiful, have a deep dark side. Various toxic ingredients and hazardous chemicals used in cosmetics are incorporated in beyond acceptable limits. These chemicals may cause serious ill effects on skin and may also enter skin and other organs causing carcinogenicity.
Method: KAP Knowledge, Attitude and Practice survey is method used for gathering quantitative data Knowledge related to use of cosmetic product among adolescent girl showed that only 19(31.66%) girls had good knowledge about cosmetic use, 25(41%) had average knowledge and 16(26.66%) had poor knowledge. Attitude related to practice of cosmetic use leading to adverse effect on skin among adolescent girl indicated that majority 78.3% showed positive attitude towards practice of cosmetic use leading to adverse effect on skin and only 21.7% showed negative attitude towards practice of cosmetic use leading to adverse effect on skin, Practice while purchase of cosmetic: only 28% students checked brands and credibility before purchase of cosmetic, only 36% did patch test before the application of cosmetic on their skin, 41.6% checked for manufacture and expiry date of products, only 3.3% checked for the list of ingredient in cosmetic 30% rarely checked for and brands logo and place of manufacture of cosmetic product, 55% checked for the price rather than other factors. Correlation between knowledge attitude and practice of found that the t-test compared result showed positive correlation than calculated value t=2.962 which is greater than t=1.675 at 0.05 level of significance.
