Abstract :
Dietary nutrients in a food are responsible for an animal's overall fitness. Diet is a versatile environmental factor that affects both mental and physical health. The present study aims to investigate the effect of whey protein on the sex ratio in Drosophila melanogaster flies by culturing the flies in wheat cream agar, whey protein treated media, and mixed media. Result showed that the flies raised in mixed media had the higher fertility rate compared to the flies cultured in both whey protein media and the wheat cream agar media showed the average fertility. This suggests that variation in quality and quantity of nutrients affects the fertility in D. melanogaster. Further, the whey protein treated media decreases offspring production indicating less fertility rate.
