Abstract :
Agriculture sector plays an important role in Indian economy and it is the back bone of our nation. The growth of industrial and other sectors is heavily depending on agriculture. It provides employment opportunities directly to rural people and indirectly to other labourers. It also helps to improve our foreign exchange by increasing our export activities. It is said that farmers are the backbone of the Indian economy. Paddy is one of the important food crops in India. It is a leading food for more than fifty percentage of population in the world especially in Asian countries. It’s a primary food of every people in the Indian subcontinent. Paddy growers are facing many problems in all the stages of cultivation, harvest and marketing. At present there is greater demand for rice and other countries looking towards India for the import of rice. In this background, it is essential to study the problems of paddy growers and try to solve their problems. Paddy is one of the important cereal crops of Chikamagaluru district which receives heavy rainfall during mansoon. Paddy cultivation in Chikkamagaluru district is being declining due to many reasons. The main objective of this paper ‘‘problems of paddy growers-a study in Sringeri taluk of Chikmagalur district’’ is to study the problems faced by paddy cultivators and the reason behind conversion of paddy land in Sringeri Taluk of Chikmagalur district of Karnataka state.
