Impact of Fruit Rot Disease on Income of Arecanut Growers-A Study in Thirthahalli Taluk of Malnad Region

Abstract :

Arecanut plays a significant role in the life of the people of malnad. It’s a prominent source of income to many people. More than 90% population directly or indirectly depend heavily on arecanut cultivation and marketing. Areca nut palm in these regions is being affected severely by a number of diseases during different stages of its growth and development. Nearly nine to twelve types of diseases like fruit rot, yellow leaf disease, stem breaking, nut splitting, fungal infection to leaves, bud decompose, spring decompose etc cause damages to the trees which has been found in this region. One among them is fruit rot disease which cause huge losses to the farmers, nearly 40 to 90% crop loss, if proper measures are not taken. This disease prevails in all the arecanut regions which receives heavy rainfall in rainy days. The protection of crops from this disease is a big challenge amidst heavy rainfall which does not allow to spray fungicide. Thirthahalli of malnad region receives very high rainfall during monsoon season. Keeping these points in background, this study” impact of fruit rot disease on income of arecanut growers-a study in Thirthahalli taluk of malnad region” has made an attempt to study impact of fruit rot disease on income, the knowledge of growers towards fruit rot disease, the measures taken to control the disease, the problems faced by the farmers and insurance coverage for crop failure.
