Abstract :
The present study on Status of Rural Women in Haryana: Education, Employment and Social Change in Contemporary Context examines the socio-economic conditions, empowerment level and structural barriers faced by rural women in Haryana. Despite significant economic growth, the state continues to reflect deep gender disparities in education, employment, health and decision-making. The objectives of the study are to assess the socio-economic status and empowerment level of rural women, identify socio-cultural and economic barriers affecting their development and suggest appropriate social work and policy interventions to reduce gender inequality. The study is based on a descriptive research design using a mixed-method approach. Primary data were collected from 150 women respondents selected from one village each in Kurukshetra and Jhajjar districts of Haryana through interview schedules and observation. Secondary data were gathered from government reports, journals, books and official statistics such as NFHS-5, PLFS and Haryana Economic Survey. Findings reveal that although 46 percent of respondents belong to the productive age group (26-35 years), educational attainment remains limited, with 22.00 percent illiterate and only 14 percent having higher education. Employment patterns indicate that 54.00 percent are homemakers and only a small proportion are engaged in self-employment or SHGs. Economic vulnerability persists, as 46.00 percent earn less than Rs. 5,000 monthly. However, 70.00 percent of respondents reported awareness of their rights and 62.00 percent reported improved household decision-making. Despite this, only 28.00 percent possess asset ownership and 29.00 percent participate in governance, indicating partial empowerment. The study concludes that women in rural Haryana are experiencing uneven and sector-specific empowerment, where awareness and education have improved but economic independence and agency remain constrained by patriarchal norms. It suggests strengthening SHGs, improving digital literacy, promoting legal awareness and enhancing women’s participation in governance to achieve holistic empowerment and sustainable gender equality.
