Understanding NEP 2020 and its Vision for Teacher Education

Abstract :

The National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 marks a significant step forward in India’s effort to reform its education system. Among its many ambitious goals, the policy places strong emphasis on transforming teacher education to ensure that teachers are well-prepared, professionally equipped, and deeply committed to their roles. This paper explores the core vision of NEP 2020 regarding teacher preparation, development, and ongoing support. It highlights the introduction of a four-year integrated B.Ed. program, the shift toward multidisciplinary learning environments, and the push for continuous professional development. The study also examines the policy’s intent to enhance the quality of teaching through new curriculum frameworks, modern pedagogy, and improved institutional standards. By analyzing these changes, the paper seeks to provide a comprehensive understanding of how NEP 2020 aims to strengthen the foundation of India’s education system through a renewed focus on teachers and teaching. The main objective of this research is to analyze the key proposals of NEP 2020 related to teacher education, to understand the four-year integrated B.Ed. program, to examine the quality of education and its outcomes, to identify challenges, to suggest recommendations for strengthening teacher education under NEP 2020.The study has the hypothesis H₀ and H₁. The variables of the study are the independent variable, the dependent variable the control variable. The study follows a qualitative descriptive approach, which uses content analysis of policy documents, academic literature and institutional reports. The data was collected from secondary sources such as NEP 2020 document, reports of the Ministry of Education, publications by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) and peer-reviewed articles from academic journals.
