Abstract :
This paper explores the fascinating intersection between Translation Studies and Shakespeare’s tragedies, focusing on how they have been translated into various Indian languages, including Sanskrit. The analysis delves into the challenges faced by translators in maintaining the essence of Shakespeare’s plays, while also adapting the cultural and linguistic nuances of different Indian societies. The role of translation as a tool for cultural exchange and the propagation of Shakespearean themes in the Indian subcontinent is also discussed, with a particular focus on the historical and contemporary translations in languages such as Hindi, Bengali, Tamil and Sanskrit. Furthermore, this paper investigates how the translation of Shakespeare’s tragedies contributes to the evolving discourse on translation theory and its implications for literary studies.
