Pagan Elements in Wordsworth’s Corpus: A Critical Analysis
Author : Dr. Manoj KR Nanda
Abstract :
William Wordsworth, a central figure in the Romantic literary movement, is often celebrated for his reverence of nature, his introspective spirituality, and his idealistic vision of human connection with the natural world. While Wordsworth's poetry frequently foregrounds themes of nature and spirituality, a closer examination reveals the presence of pagan elements within his corpus. This paper aims to explore the nuanced interplay between Wordsworth's Romantic vision and the pagan motifs embedded in his work. By examining key poems and their thematic undercurrents, we will elucidate how Wordsworth's engagement with pagan traditions offers a distinct perspective on spirituality and nature, reflecting both a return to pre-Christian beliefs and a critique of contemporary religious and philosophical ideas.
