Author : Sai Shresta CM and Krishna MS

Abstract :

Prebiotics are a class of nutrients that the gut bacteria may still break down while resisting the enzymatic and acidic digestion that takes place in the small intestine. Products made of prebiotic supplement are designed for certain health drinks with high fiber and vitamin contents. In the present study the flies of control and prebiotic supplement treated media were used to study longevity in Drosophila melanogaster. It was noticed that control flies had significantly higher longevity than prebiotic supplement fed flies. Further longevity increases with increased concentration of prebiotic supplement in female whereas opposite trend was noticed in male longevity. Further females had significantly greater longevity compared to male longevity in both control and prebiotic supplement treated flies in D. melanogaster, thus these studies suggest prebiotic supplement decreases longevity in D. melanogaster.
