Knowledge and Attitude towards Organ Donation among Nursing Students Studying in Selected Nursing College in Puducherry

Abstract :
Organ donation programs are at a very primordial stage in India and are almost negligible in its North-Eastern region. A Descriptive study to assess the level of knowledge and attitude towards organ donation among Students studying in selected college in Puducherry.
Aim: This study is aimed to identify the level of knowledge and attitude towards organ donation among Students studying in selected college in Puducherry.
Subjects and Methods: The study was conducted among 100 students studying in selected Nursing College in Puducherry by using convenient sampling technique. By interview method, demographic data, knowledge and attitude data was collected by using structured questionaire.
Result: The major findings of the study as out of the 100 students, nearly 65% of study populations were in the age group of 17-18 years and 75% students of them were female. 50% of them were studying in I & II year of B.sc Nursing. Nearly 72% students were in Puducherry region and 58% of them come from urban area. 90% were Hindu and 64% of them were gained information from television. 77% students have not attended any course, seminar or a workshop concerning organ donation or transplantation and 88% were unaware and not donated Organs in their family respectively. Regarding the level of knowledge, 72% had moderately adequate level of knowledge, 26% had adequate level of knowledge and only 2%had inadequate level of knowledge respectively. Regarding the level of attitude, 93% of students had Favorable attitude towards organ donation, 7% had moderately favorable attitude towards organ donation. There is a positive correlation (r = 0.002) between knowledge and attitude of students and no significant association between level of knowledge and attitude of students towards organ donation with selected demographic data.
Conclusion: The study revealed that nursing students need more knowledge and positive attitude towards organ donation and creation of awareness to the public.
