Abstract :
Nutrition is an important environmental factor known to affect life span, aging rate, and reproductive capacity. Nowadays popularity of using spirulina is more common but quality and quantity of using spirulina has either detrimental or benefits on organisms fitness. Present study was carried out to study the effect of spirulina and wheat cream agar media on longevity. The results obtained in our study revealed that flies raised in control media had greater longevity compared to the flies raised in spirulina treated media. Further as the concentration of spirulina increases the longevity decreases suggesting toxic effect of spirulina on longevity. In the present study we have also recorded the sex differences in longevity in control and spirulina treated flies suggesting sex differences in relation to longevity. Females were found to have greater longevity than males. Thus these studies in D. melanogaster suggests that spirulina had negative effect on longevity.
