Author : Navas M Khadar and Bijulal MV
Abstract :
This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on interstate migrant workers in Kerala, highlighting the state's unique approach, often referred to as "the Kerala Model." Known for its strong public health system and social welfare policies, Kerala faced significant challenges in addressing the needs of its large migrant worker population during the pandemic. This analysis explores how Kerala's proactive measures, including extensive testing, efficient quarantine protocols, and comprehensive support systems, mitigated the adverse effects of the pandemic on migrant workers. The study also discusses the socio-economic implications of these measures and assesses their effectiveness in ensuring the well-being of this vulnerable group. This research provides insights into the potential for robust public health strategies in managing crises involving migrant populations by evaluating the successes and shortcomings of "The Kerala Model."
